BUCKET PIN Jan 24, 2026

Bucket pins play an important role in the performance and durability of excavators and bulldozers. Knowing what a bucket pin is and how to measure it so important. As an experienced manufacturer of bucket pin , we suggest always confirming measurements, material specifications, and machine models before ordering replacement bucket pins to achieve the best performance and longest service life.

As a professional manufacturer of bucket pins, we often receive questions such as: What exactly is a bucket pin? and How do I measure a bucket pin correctly? Below suggestion give a clear introduction to bucket pins and measurements, help equipment owners and maintenance teams choose the right pins.

What Is a Bucket Pin?

A bucket pin is a critical mechanical component used in excavators, bulldozers, and other construction machinery.

It connects the bucket to the arm, linkage, or quick coupler, allow of smooth movement during digging, lifting, and loading operations.

Together with bucket bushings, bucket pins form a pivot system so they can transfer heavy loads while enabling rotation.

Bucket pins are usually made from high-strength alloy steel (45# 40Cr, 42CrMo) and experience heat treatment such as quenching and tempering to improve bucket pins hardness, wear resistance, and fatigue strength. Depending on the usage, they may also feature surface hardening or chrome plating to extend service life in harsh working environments like mining, or earthmoving.

Common types include excavator bucket pins, arm pins, linkage pins, and mini excavator digger pins, each designed for specific machine models and working conditions.

How to Measure a Bucket Pin Correctly

Accurate measurement is necessary when replacing a bucket pin.

1. Measure Pin Diameter

Measure the outer diameter of the pin using a vernier caliper or micrometer. This is the most critical dimension, as it must match the inner diameter of the bucket bushings and pins system.

2. Measure Effective Length

The effective length is the working length between the pin shoulders or retaining grooves. This ensures proper fit between the bucket, arm, and linkage without side play.

3. Measure Overall Length

Measure the whole length of the bucket pin from end to end. Some designs include extra length for washers, seals, or locking devices.

4. Measure Retaining Structure

Check the pin if they use lock holes, grooves, or bolt-type retainers. The position and size of these features must match the original design.

5. Measure Wear Condition

If measuring a used pin, always measure the worn area. Worn pins may appear smaller than their original size, may be putying incorrect replacement if not checked carefully.
