What Are Excavator Bushes Made Of and Why Do They Matter? Sep 17, 2026

Excavators bucket bushes play an outsized role in keeping them operational, efficient, and safe.

The Purpose of Excavator Bushings

Excavator bushings call sleeve bearing, is a cylindrical metal sleeve inserted into the hinge area of components like the bucket, boom, or arm . Its mainly purpose is to serve as a sacrificial bearing surface between a pin and the surrounding housing. When the excavator operates, pins rotate within these bushes, allowing the machine's arm and bucket to pivot smoothly. Instead of the pin grinding directly against the expensive structural components, the bushings takes the wear .

The benefits of this design are threefold.

First, Bucket bushings reduce friction and wear on the pins, extending the lifespan of both the pins and the surrounding housing .

Second, they maintain proper alignment and stability of the bucket and arm, which is essential for precise digging and efficient operation .

Third, they can be replaced. When a bucket bushing wears out, it can be swapped out easily, so they can protect the bucket and arm went broken.

Excavator bushings are manufactured from kinds of materials, each offering distinct advantages depending on the application and operating conditions.

Hardened Alloy Steel is the standard material for earth-moving machinery bushings . Common steel grades include 40CR, 20CrMnTi, 42CrMo, GCr15, . These bushings undergo specialized heat treatment to achieve case hardness depths of 0.8 to 2.0 millimeters and hardness ratings of 58 to 62 HRC on the Rockwell scale . hardness depths depend on thickness of bushings wall. This hardened outer layer provides exceptional wear resistance while the softer core maintains toughness and shock absorption. The low friction coefficient of hardened steel makes it ideal for protecting housings from premature wear .

Bronze and Brass bushings are used in applications where self-lubricating properties are beneficial . Cast bronze bushings offer excellent wear resistance, low friction, and high load-carrying capacity . They are often embedded with solid lubricants to provide continuous, maintenance-free operation. These self-lubricating bushings work particularly well in track linkages and other components where regular greasing is difficult .

Carbon Steel provides good strength and durability for standard excavator applications, making it a cost-effective choice for general-purpose digging and loading operations .

Advanced Polymers are increasingly being used as alternatives to traditional metallic materials. Polymer bushings are self-lubricating and excel in wet, dirty conditions . They offer up to ten times the wear life of bronze in some applications and can reduce lubrication costs and maintenance downtime . Some research has shown that polymer materials can extend the life of mining equipment components by 2.5 to 4 times while reducing repair labor costs .

Understanding what bushings are made of and how they function is the first step toward proper maintenance and maximum equipment lifespan. Excavator bucket bushes are not the most visible components on a machine, but their role is indispensable. so selecting the appropriate material—whether hardened steel for high-impact digging, bronze for self-lubricating applications, or advanced polymers for demanding environments are really important.
